2.28 I have stayed in Kep for several days already, and did not expect that I would just extend my stay at this lovely house with a welcoming French family by the shore of The Gulf of Thailand. l to the residents here given its the dry season of the year, and no rainfall is expected. Thanks to the storm, my sneakers turned out to be soaked in water, but luckily, I got my flip flops to back up. Having had an energy-boosting breakfast, I rode my bicycle heading to the entrance of the trail in a nearby national park, yes ridding a bicycle with my flip flops on. That’s not common for me. Well, I thought it would be paved pathway as I read from some reviews where people mentioned that it is accessible by scooters or bicycles. The reality said that “no no Chen，you gotta do real off-road biking here which is what your MTB specifically designed for”. The last time when I was in mountains dealing with uphills is probably one and half months ago in Laos. The memories of mountains and bicycle was back when I chose to just get off from my bike and push it hard upward. I stoped by a very simple temple that had a buddha in it. I took off my flip flops, put my palms together, closed my eyes and made a prayer(it was more like a greeting, as I learned from my mom that whenever I see a buddha, I should say ‘hi’). Some noise came as I finished my pray. It was made by a flying creature. Oh, on the ceiling over the buddha, it was trying to get rid of from the attention from 3 fat wall geckos. They are the biggest ones I have seen so far. I walked out and kept pushing my bicycle, oh my, a dog in a prosperity started barking towards me. I have met enough barking dogs to start to have the confidence to just keep walking by as if they are not barking at all, but at the same time, hoped that something to come to distract it from me and my bike. Yes, the sound of scooter came from behind and it turned out to be a foreign-looking guy ridding on it with a helmet on that had a sport camera filming.With the scooter, the guy passed me from behind real fast. But in less than 30 seconds, he made a turn and went downhill and the scooter sound faded out. As I was wondering why he made a turn, another dog started to bark; a house came into my view along with 2 women in very short cut. The very first thought I had was that they should be monks. I greeted them with a smile on and sour-sdai, and they were smiling back. The dog was following me with suspicion. I thought I knew why the guy did not keep going. It was because the fence of a power facility seemed to block the path.I parked my bicycle and went on to check out if the path was continuous. Yes, it was. As I bent down to see the pinkish flowers growing from the root of the fence, I noticed that the suspicious dog was still staring at me. One of the woman went out to see if the dog was making any trouble. Then I decided to keep going. I passed the fence area, and came to a intersection and chose the path that led to the peak. As I kept walking, the cheek felt the itch. SPIDER NET and a REDDISH SPIDER ! Oh, one of the fears for me. What’s more, it reminded me of the trail back in Luang Namtha where I and a companion came cross with wield crawling insects. ‘Sh*t, I don’t have my feet covered, Chen how could you come to ride, which turned out to be a trek, with a pair of flip flops.” I stayed there not moving for probably 5 minutes having a debate going on in my mind “ you are so close to the peak, and it’s not a high mountain, but just a bit more than 200 meters””oh you want see more of the wield-looking molluscs that are going to freak you hell out” I turned the head of my bicycle to where I came, only to see the appearance of a dog and a guy, and as usualI said sour-sdai. He reached out two arms, suggesting keep going. (I judged at that moment that dog was one of the previous barking dogs, and he just lived here) I was thinking, yeah I could follow the local and the insects would not be a problem. As I was turning my bike back and trying to let know that there was a net and spider which he did not notice , he just went though. I was following him in the forest. He let me walk in the front, and later on helped me take the bicycle. He parked it aside as the path next was not accessible with it.And after a bit, we came to this Sunset Stone as it marked on my map where the view of ocean, islands, coastline roads came to eyes after the previous trek in dense and thick forest. There was a bench where you could sit on to enjoy the view. He tapped his hand on it, and I went and sat down. I could not pinpoint out since when I started to feel the uncomfortability, but noticed that he moved a bit closer and did a gesture to slightly arm me. I got alert and cautious, and stood up walking upwards a bit to the rock, “it ’s a nice view” and tended to leave. He then got up and was trying to pulled me back. I shew a bit of my anger and said stop. “No no no I gotta go back” and let know my intention with big gestures of arm pointing the direction where we came. He then kept following me, and reached out his hands under my arms when I stepped on a higher stone. “Fucking Cambodian boy”. I got to where my bicycle was, before turning it around, I gave him a please gesture meaning that you go before me ,and was insisting a few times when he was trying to let me walk in the front. Along the way back to the house with the barking dog and two women, I kept talking, and speaking word by word and loudly. Stressing each word I spoke including the Cambodian version of hello, thank you, goodbye , thank you very much, Khmer(as if I was learning) to break the freaking silence and to distract him. HIs phone rang. He pointed at it saying friend , and then pointed at me , saying friend. I kept saying go go. At the intersection, he stoped and popped up with I love you. I was like ,oh f*ck Cambodia boy…. “I have a husband. He is waiting for me in the house” and kept walking. FINALLY, I made it to the house, (saw a scooter there), and parked my bike, finger pointed at myself saying Jin(china), and sat down.,followed by the thought that if it was the woman telling him that I was in the forest and what if they are together. I pointed at my bike, saying Jin, Lao, Vietnam and the body language as if I am ridding a bike. He started talking in Cambodian seemingly to explain to the woman what I was trying to say. After a bit, I said I had to go, my husband is waiting. And said Lee-hai(bye in Cambodian) It was a rocky downslope and I did not care about the barking dog anymore, but just wanted to get out of the place to the main road as soon as possible. ‘Fuck, he is coming with me on a scooter’ and his dog too. I just kept ridding and yelling go, go, go, woohoooo…. After the rocky downhill, it came the grassy stony flat. Yes! I saw two walking persons in front.”HELLO!” Yes they are travers!!Thank Buddha! I stayed with a CS host in Soc Trang for the night. Reached her house in the early afternoon after a couple rides of ferry. f which was a narrow n muddy pathway in farmlands. I had no choice but pulled my bicycle on it following the guidance from the map. But luckily I made it to her house. She was not home by the time I got there. Her chubby smiley younger brother came out to help me with carry my panniers and parking the bicycle. Her mother showed me the bathroom where I took a shower immediately after getting into her house. She was back by the time I finished the shower. Thao took me to her friend’s house for a party. The food, interesting. So there was a plate of fish. The senior introduced that one kind of the fish(the longer and slim kind) was from the river, whereas the other kind was from the sea. There was a salad as well. It was just one kind of green. It tasted numb. That’s bizarre to me… In mekong delta, the 3 major ethnic groups are Kinh,Hoa and Khamer Krom. At the party, I met a Hoa person, Chinese Vietnamese. His surname is a typical Chinese name, as well as the given name. He showed me a picture of a town stone with Chinese characters on, and asked me for his grandmother’s name. It was ancient Chinese, so I needed to use Baidu to help understand the meaning of the weird phrases. We sang karaoke as well, with the mega-speaker-phone. They are fomiliar with a few Chinese songs, mostly were like songs from fujian n Taiwan. 爱拼才会赢was one of them. Also , 九百九十九朵玫瑰. Had a good time there.

Today, I got hit with a scooter. I was paddling and thinking of finding a coconut place with hammocks to take a relaxing hour long break. Such a place alike caught my attention. It was on the opposite side of the road, so I got to make a cross to reach there. I glimpsed the situation at back, thinking it was a good time to cross without getting off from the bike. In the middle of the turn and crossing, I heard a male voice of screaming, and then his scooter hit on the front tire of my bicycle. [...]
I fell on the ground, and he and the vehicle stopped 5 or 6 meters away. While I was falling, my phone on the rack flied out. The phone case lost the phone, the pieces of small sheets(probably mostly were tickets I collected) and some cards, that I put in the case , were falling too, down on the ground here and there. The skin covered the joint area linking the thumb and palm of my left hand got bruised now. Also, the screen of my phone got cracked a bit. And my bicycle,due to the hitting, the axis of the front wheel got dislocated.Some other scooter drivers pulled their vehicle coming to help picking up the tickets and cards, asking me if I was ok, helping relocating the wheel and testing if the bicycle was fine too. Other than those aftermaths, I was very fine. The scooter driver was ok too. I ordered 2 coconuts with ice in a row to cool/ calm down. I took a ferry ride again today to cross the river. On the ferry came a truck loaded with grown pigs. At first I did not have much of my attention caught. As the ferry started moving, esp. when it was swinging as the waves came and went, the truck was in the same motion, as any person or subject on the ferry. I concerned if the the truck would rollover, and consciously pulled my bike a bit further. I was gazing at the truck, and saw the details of what it is loading. It was all pigs getting stuck in little space. With the swing of the truck, the pigs were making sound out of discomfort . I felt sad for them, as they may be the ones on the way to the butcher's house to got slaughtered. Maybe now when I am writing down the words, they are not alive and getting cut into big chucks. Then the chunks get sorted out by body parts... I did not feel fine with that scene at all, and had the thought cross my mind that maybe I should start a vegan diet.

2.12 Today, after 50km of paddling, I reached Hochiminh (Saigon) city. The traffic today, yaaaaaa OVERWHELMINGLY HEAVY!! In the outskirt of the city, it was all lorries , trucks and of course scooters. The road, at most, has 4 lanes for one direction, but generally , only 2 lanes. I have to say that some of the drivers are rude! Very much! As getting closer to the center, noticeably the big guys are disappearing, but there came more and more scooters. cockroach? Just imagine hundreds of cockroaches by you side… terrifying .. I learnt how to go across the street in hochiminh even when there is no traffic light, or not really useful once. Just observe the vehicles on the parallel street to you. If they are crossing the road, you can do that too. As the number of them is enough to pack the whole pathway, the vehicles from the other direction just cannot find any chance to get though., which makes it safe for the pedestrian to cross. The air in Hochiminh is not as good as the other places in Vietnam I have been to. It feels like I am observing the aftermath of rush industrial development. Interestingly, I found, in the tourism area, there are lively shops, eateries and hostels opened in narrow pathways between buildings. By narrow, I mean, approximately of width of 3 meters. Crowded and lively. That was so new to me. Also, it is because of the shortage on the space, the first hostel I went to had no room to place my bicycle. And it is not the only one. Therefore, there is Parking place, that has a space similar with a hostel, that is offering 2-wheel-vehicle parking in exchange of 20,000 vtd for 24 hours. Tonight, I went to a bar for the salsa event in the little blue dress I got today from HM. It is packed with expats(I think most of the foreigners there belongs to this category.) Like the vibe there. I ordered a mojito and took the class, learnt a few routines with basic steps and turns. It was kinda boring when it was all beginners, thus I left very soon after the class. On my way back to the hostel , I stopped by a convenience store, it was a MINISTOP, I love shops like that offering many options with reasonable pricing. I even saw triangle kimbbap, reminding me of Korea. Fresh fruit there looked very nice too. Love that place. Got my Cambodia visa 30usd+5usd

mer heatstroke" level of heat(that's winter-mild kind of heat already, in comparison to the rest of the year).Back to the weather here, the shoer was just getting heavier that kept me sitting in the eatery till lunch time when I ordered another Bun for Lunch. A bit after placing the order, one of the twin daughters of the owner's shew me the translated message from her phone saying I can have the meal together with the family if I want. I gladly said yes and thanks.It was a cold dish of intestine, quite tasty and chewy.The twins are two beautiful girls studying in High school.They have a elder brother now in Japan as a student.The mother let me video chat with her son, moving the laptop and 2 speaking all the way to my table from the kitchen. But we don't share a language to speak... The rain just kept going... The mother let one the the girl text talk to me asking if I would like to stay at their house for the night as the rain s heavy. I was thinking of going back to the hotel before, but acceptted their #kind n #hospitable offer. In the later afternoon, the mother figure I wantted to take a nap, and let me sleep on the bed right beside the kitchen. Dinner was a morning glory soup with prawns and a savory stir-fry #fish. The fish taste great, and she gave me the receipy. I bet it requires very freshly salted fish to result it that firmness of the meat n taste. Homing the seashore enables them to source food ingredients from the generous #ocean. I am staying at the mother's sister's house tonigh. She gave me the bed, and does floor sleeping herself.. reached this beachside backpacker hostel on the 28th after a long ride of almost 100km. Also, I had the very first view of the ocean in Vietnam. It is pretty windy and cloudy here. bbles which made the look like white ribbons heading towards me. I remember the waves I saw in Sokcho in Korea, it was shady waves at night like some black thing coming over. I rode mostly on flat road on 28th. I had a pho as breakfast, the auntie gave me a plate of 3 deep-fried spring rolls with shrimp paste and veggie stuffing for free. It was drizzling after I left the pho place, but I did not stop for sheltering but kept ridding. Thanks to the info I found on line earlier that I did not take the Highway ROUTE 1which would be fairly crowded with trucks(and the lanes are narrow.) I wanted to take the risk as the distance I had to cover to reach Dong Hoi would be 4km shorter. But after being squeezed to the the very edge of the lane by 'the big guys', I chose the longer route without hesitation . It was mostly view of rice paddies and seemed to me it is the period when the farmers ,wearing the bamboo hats, are busy transplanting rice seedlings One interesting thing to me is that the tombs here are in open area, not like the ones back home where ppl prefer to have them set in remote n quite mountains n forest. Tombs here are right beside the rice field or residential area. Those tombs are quite fancy. From a distance I saw them, I thought that was a garden of different architectures with various styles all in one garden (some has a big church Cross on, some typical vtn style) Limesone hills stand out from flat green rice paddies with river flowing across, farmers busy farming, big white water birds seeking foods here n there in the paddies, cloudy sky, beeping scooters n occasionally passing through big cars; curious kids n adults shouting hello n something I don't know from far... imagine that picture. not ridding on 29th

reached DONG LE today, after riding more than 100KM. It should be the first time I ever rode this much of distance.Road was almost flat. I was chased by barking dogs a few times in a single day today!! Also I learnt a lesson from it. That is to observe the two sides of the road, when houses start to appear,to tell if they have any dogs, and if the dog is leashed or not. to ride very fast , as you will later be chased by the barking dogs for sure. One more thing I learnt, BARK BACK OR BARK FIRST TO THE DOGS THAT ARE ATTEMPTING A CHASE. A fair chance is that they will be scared off first. lolllllll

休至24日 the guesthouse is called JOY. I got a bed in a 5 bed room with showering space, toilet and a desk in to use, which costs me 30rmb per day. Also free entrance to the outdoor swimming pool one the 4th floor(but its kinda cold to swim in December.)by the swimming poor , there is a laidback cafe whose chineses& English manu has beverage and meals listed. in the case of meals, each set is 15 rmb, which is pretty fair. And I got a free coffee to company my meal. It's my 3rd day here alread [...]
y, a few more days to stay until I get my Laos visa. Really nice place
